This is an absolutely fascinating travelogue by a girl who takes motorcycle rides through the dead zone surrounding the entombed Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Lots of photos, and lots of interesting facts about the area and it’s history since the accident. It’s sickening the way the old communist government handled the accident – keeping it a secret, failing to evacuate the residents until it was too late for many of them, sending hundreds of firemen, helicopter pilots, and other workers to their deaths in their efforts to control the radiation leakage, and imprisoning the plant workers who tried to stop the meltdown (until their deaths by radiation poisoning, that is). There’s an entire town – with apartment blocks, stores, highways, and lots of old Soviet propaganda – abandoned there. Go look, it’s a good read.
