Out of Battlefield Metaphors!!!

Ever since the kids returned from The Hurricane State they’ve been huge Cruxshadows fans, so when I saw that they were playing an all-ages with one of our favorite bands, Ego Likeness, I decided we couldn’t miss it. So last night I drove the Lady, the Princess, and the Lad down to the Ottobar.

This was the kids’ first concert, and I think they both enjoyed it a lot, although the Lad got predictably sleepy as the night wore on. I didn’t recognize as many people there as I’d hoped. It was a small crowd overall. I wonder if it was the fact that it was a Monday night? Or did the word just not get out?

The Drowning Season played a good set, as far as I can tell; but I confirmed that my earlier impression was not a fluke. They just aren’t my thing.

Ego Likness lived up to my expectations. Very good set.

Then it was time for the Cruxshadows. The lights went out. Fog poured from the stage in a blue glow. A somber voice intoned:

“In ancient times, hundreds of years before the dawn of history, an ancient race of peoples… the Druids. No one knows who they were or what they were doing…”*

And Rogue, hair a-spike and flashlights in hand stalked up to the stage, and…

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHEEHEEHEHEHHAHAHHOHOHOhehehe*snort*

Excuse me.

Heh.

*giggle*

Ahem.

Nobody told me they were a parody band! That was the funniest damn thing I’ve seen in months! There were dancing girls! There was pompous posing! There were ominous spoken-word intros to every song! There were countless references to battles and angels! It was like Wierd Al Yankovic spoofing VNV Nation. Now that’s entertainment!

Rogue gets my Pompous Fuck of the Year award for his general demeanor but specifically for pitching a hissyfit when the audience failed to be completely silent while he was introducing the band. I forgave him though, because he was nice to the kids during his many sojourns into the audience, serenading them, shaking their hands, and eventually pulling the Princess (along with most of the rest of the audience) onto the stage at the very end.

All in all, a good night was had by all. But I suspect the nect time I hear Cruxshadows at a club I’m going to have a very hard time suppressing the urge to bust out laughing.

* Yes, that’s a quote from Spinal Tap. No, it’s not really what they said. But it might as well have been, it was that pompous and silly.

  1. *scratches head*

…and so no one comments. I think you’ve offended the masses, babe.

  2. Parodies are great.

    See? Someone commented. πŸ˜›

    1. The sad thing is, as far as I know they aren’t intentionally a parody… I think they take themselves pretty seriously.

      1. I think that would make it even funnier, but that might be my cruel side talking.

        …Naah

  3. possibly this?

It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know

If so, that’s part of a Poe poem called Annabel Lee, and also an mp3 you can download from their webpage.

  4. Yeah, as soon as Rogue starts talking all I can think of is “Stoooone-heeeeedge…..where the demon’s dwell……”….hehe, yeah, sorry, I’m still laughing too damn hard to think of anything intelligent to say……

    1. Say, did you keep a record of what you played? If so, I’d like to know what the three or four songs after the Smashing Pumpkins cover were.

      Thanks!

      1. Sure did…..

Sigue Sigue Sputnik-Bullet With Butterfly Wings (SM cover)
        Android Lust – Stained
        Malign – Skin & Lye
Die Form – The Hidden Cage
        Terrorfakt – Bells of War

        1. Oops, that shoud be (SP cover)……glad you liked the set….

  5. Well, whatever the masses say, I think this is hysterical. I’d pay to see Rogue singing “Stonehenge.”

  6. hey there!
you have been friended – rogue picture is here, but feel free to poke around, as the plethora of mutual friends between us indicates that we’ll probably be seeing eachother around. πŸ™‚

    1. Thanks! Yes, we’ll most likely be seeing each other around. Perhaps can introduce us next time we’re out.

    2. P.S.

You’ve been friended back. From a quick perusal, it looks like I’m going to very much enjoy having your journal added to my daily reading πŸ™‚

      1. Re: P.S.

feeling is entirely mutual; you seem neat! πŸ™‚

  7. Hello Avdi. This is Jack writing. I just opened a livejournal and am typing to you because I would like if we could be on each others friendlist. I had been kicking myself for missing the Cruxshadows concert. Ha. Thank you for your in~depth review. It makes me smile to read it (partly because intelligent writing is difficult to find and quite a wonderful thing to read) because I saw the Crux’s at the Sidebar within the past year and I loved it quite, and bought the recent album based on the mythologies. In any case I need not kick myself much anymore for missing the recent concert, from your review I can tell that the concert I went to was apparently essentially identical to last week’s. Yet reading your review I see your point also and almost have to laugh out loud at just remembering the concert I went to. I like goth, but perhaps I like it because I accept its pretentiousness, sometimes I want to revel in it, because sometimes knowledgeable participation in glorious pretention is quite okay , as intelligent people , as long as they realize and admit to it ? Whew. I am only thinking out loud through the keyboard, no offense please. I am on my way to a nap. I also quite enjoyed your blog/webpage discussion. bye 4 now*

    1. Hiya! You’ve been added, feel free to add me back. Welcome to the wierd world of LJ πŸ™‚
