This is my first attempt at character fiction for the LARP I’m playing. Comments and criticism welcome.

EDIT: There’s some assumed back story here that may not be clear to people not playing the LARP. Nutshell version: A mad dragon has been ravaging the countryside. A general call was put out to form a dragon-hunting party. The party located the dragon, and lured it into a trap in a ravine. The dragon was wounded but managed to break out of the trap, killing a lot of men in the process.
Gives decent insight into the temperament of your character.
I’d fix this line…
“He turned the Lila’s head to the river, and urged her forward.”
(change to He turned Lila’s head)
Also, a fair amount of emphasis seems placed on the dragon’s already damaged wings. That in fact being the reason for your escape. But no mention of how such occurred. I’d toss in a line to clarify the background information of the tattered wings. (ie: Scars and holes, the results of the many burnt corpses unsuccessful attempts to slay the dragon. Weakened but far from being out of action.)
Or something to that effect.

PS – you never answered my prior question: so where are you LARP’ing? is it an open LARP? I’ve always wanted to LARP. But if it’s a small knit group and you’d rather not have me I’d understand. That said, if you they were looking for more participants I might be interested.
There’s a lot of assumed backstory that everyone in the LARP is expected to already know. I guess I should put a note to that effect in the LJ post.
The LARP is down in College Park. It’s based on the George R. R. Martin Song of Ice and Fire books (have you read them?). It’s once a month, plus various online shenanigans and some between-game events. As far as I know they are still taking new players. I was introduced to it by a friend of mine who is already well-established in the game. I would feel somewhat less confident introducing you to it while I’m still trying to find my footing, but if you want I can put you in touch with the Storytellers.
“The LARP is down in College Park.”
Er…I am still fairly new to the area. Where is college park? I presume in Maryland somewhere. Is it in the Towson area?
“I would feel somewhat less confident introducing you to it while I’m still trying to find my footing, but if you want I can put you in touch with the Storytellers.”
That’d be cool, I’d appreciate it…
“It’s based on the George R. R. Martin Song of Ice and Fire books (have you read them?).”
Have not read them. Then again, I hadn’t read the “Wheel of Time” series either when I joined a pen&paper RPG campaign. In some ways, I almost prefer that. Because it has a sort of greater realism. Simply being limited in knowledge and not having a global understanding. I was given some basic general info. And some deeper info regarding the region my character came from. And played off of that learning as I went. I also picked up the series and began reading.
So I’d likely do something similar. I’ve found Wikipedia and other sites to be pretty good in giving over-views of fantasy worlds as well.
I’ve been so craving some role-playing. I’ve only done pen & paper and never LARPed but I imagine I would still love it all the same.
Interesting, I almost picked up the D20 book for Game of Thrones.
(which I see is related)
More like DC.

ROTFL…
I just saw on Wikipedia that some believe there to be inspiration from the War of the Roses and of two houses Stark & Lannister possibly representing York and Lancaster. Which is of course all the more humorous as we in this are of Pennsylvania are also in a York & Lancaster area.
*chuckles*
It’s an open LARP, and more characters would be awesome. Wikipedia is more than adequate to fill you in on the general premise of the world. There are quite a few people playing that haven’t read the books. Really the political situation in game is all IN GAME so you’ll have to figure it out as you go.
It is in College Park, which is almost in DC, so that’s a bit of a hike from PA, but it’s only one friday a month. (And, as Avdi said, various online shennanigans between games)
Next game is tomorrow. Say the word and I’ll let the STs know I’ve got another new person coming and we’ll set you up with a character. Elsewise, hit me up later for mroe details and the date of the next game.
Hi Grey Maiden…
Just curious, what time do you guys meet?
Do you have an email?
Here are a few of my questions:
– what time do you guys meet?
– what happens in case of rain or foul weather? (especially as there is currently a winter weather advisory with expectation of snow. I don’t mind driving in the snow but I imagine playing in rain & sleet isn’t much fun)
– if I do play, I figure it’d probably be fitting to come from the House of Stark (York, War of the Roses, being north of you guys…it all just seems to fit)
– what do I need to bring (I presume I have to leave all my real & replica weapons at home. What about my shield and armor?)
– Jason
I can answer at least some of these…
Games start at eight, I believe, but it’s a good idea to show up earlier, like 7. Possibly earlier if you need to create a character.
The games are primarily indoors, so weather is only an issue as far as transportation. There may be some outdoor events, depending on weather and fictional setting.
House Stark is pretty full, so keep an open mind about what house you join. I wound up in Tyrell partly because they had space. Also, don’t expect any real correspondence between York/Stark or Lannister/Hanover.
What you bring depends entirely on what kind of character you choose to play.
Eight is doable for me…
However, not knowing how to get there…would you be game for driving down together? I can meet at your house.
We meet at 8pm. We typically meet indoors, so weather is not an issue. In the case of EXTREME weather the game might be cancelled or rescheduled, but I’m talking 2 feet of snow, not the 3 inches expected tomorrow. We’re meeting tomorrow at the Church of the Nazarene in College Park:
9704 Rhode Island Ave
College Park, MD 20740
You can wear your weapons, even your real ones. This is a political game, not a boffer fighting game, so if there is combat it is resolved with dice. We aren’t squicky about real weapons. People wear cool swords. My Uncle carries a big frickin Mace. I would not reccomend wearing your armor. Game settings are usually court settings, never battlefield. if for some reason your character needs his armor, it will be assumed he has it on hand and will don it. We do have one character that insists on wearing his breastplate though, so if it makes you happy, go for it.
As for the House, you are talking to Isa Stark of House Stark. I’m the house leader. We’d be glad to have you, but the STs may or may not let you play in our house because there are other houses that need more people. If you REALLY REALLY want to be a Stark though, I doubt they’ll deny you. . .but the other houses are cool too, I promise! Oh, and we’re nothing like York, I assure you. I think House Baratheon is probably the most Yorkish in this LARP, but really there is very little comparison to be made.
Updated schedule of dates can be found here: http://groups.google.com/group/AGOT/browse_thread/thread/159cdc5b7ac8489f/#
The LARP is actually swamping me at the moment so I have very little time to explain things to you, but if you wanted to come tomorrow you should show up a little early 7:30ish, and one of the storytellers will help you create a character and explain the game more.
Sounds good…
I’ll see if I can ride down with Avdi tomorrow. (And if there is another house that needs players that’s fine too, I just moved to York a few months ago so my ties are pretty shallow.. *lol*)
You can ride with me, although my final decision to go is pending the weather. I’m gonna try to arrive around 7, since it looks like I’ll have a pair of newbs (you and Stacey). Which means I’ll be leaving around 5.
That’s 6-10″, for those of us up here in the northlands 😛
