No really, I mean it this time.

Recently LJ added something to their layouts that causes my PC to slow down to a crawl every time I try to write a new entry. I’ve received a report of a similar issue when reading my journal.

It is time and past time that I ditched LJ and moved on.

  1. I’ve had it happen a few times, but it only happens rarely. What happens to me is that the cursor just stops moving as I type and nothing happens. In about 5-10 seconds it usually jumps ahead and everything I typed shows up. One time though, everything I typed was lost.

It has only happened 4-5 times in the last couple of days. It used to happen a LOT with my old 366mhz P3 Thinkpad before I got this 1.5Ghz Pentium M Thinkpad T40. But that was months ago now. Often the issues would happen before I even got to type into the box -just loading the “style page” was taking forever. There is one style in particular that has the calender of recent posts right there and the numbers would appear one-by-one so slowly that it was like counting. That page would sometimes take 15-20 seconds to load instead of instantly like my style does.

LJ is getting cludgy with a bunch of crap running in the background of pages, but that depends on the “style” of the journal. Some styles are worse than others and I try to do everything in “my style” but when I click on the link in the email notifications it doesn’t always show “my style” when I go back to reply via that link.

I am convinced that it is some of the weird and fancy styles that do this. I don’t understand why people want all that flashy cluttered crap. I like the plain old-fashioned easy to read original style of LJ.

Things are getting to get like myspace around here…

  2. Completely unrelated to LJ being craptacular, if you haven’t yet, you might be interested in this blog. It’s an incredibly well-done, amusing, and occasionally useful blog written by a woman from California who married a rancher and now lives on a huge cattle ranch in the middle of nowhere. She writes about, among other things, homeschooling her kids, which is why I thought of you. ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. I think I’m still using LJ’s original “S1” series theme engine for mine. I’ve had the same theme since I first started my LJ way back when. Wonder if they have an award for that? ๐Ÿ˜€

  4. Have you considered using one of the client programs instead?

Makes it much easier to write an entry (not that I’ve written one in a bit), and gives you a way to save a partially written one and get back to it.

    1. I used Emacs to write this entry. But as a long term solution it’s a bit like building a staircase to a second-story window because the front door lock is jammed. A site that’s broken by design doesn’t deserve my business.

      1. True, but it’s also the only way that I can keep up with what’s going on in your life!

        1. There’s an internet outside of LJ, you know ๐Ÿ˜‰

          For instance: http://friendfeed.com/avdi

          1. PSHAW.
