The NPR Red Herring

Where does that leave NPR? If you add up the two indirect sources of federal money – grants through CPB and member station dues – taxpayer dollars still appear to add up to less than ten percent of its budget. And while that’s not negligible, it’s a lot less than many people seem to think.

Even indirectly, the amount the US government spends on NPR is trivial. And according to this analysis, it makes up at most 10% of their budget.

Bottom line: both the calls to defund NPR and the panicked calls to “save” NPR are silly and misguided. If you post either one on Facebook or Twitter, I reserve the right to quietly giggle at you.
