Another video showing how the TSA is more about funneling money to security company cronies than actual, practical security.
The actual exploit shown here has a fairly obvious fix: replace the screen background color with something which will clearly show detected objects, like bright green. And you can bet that the TSA is talking to the vendors about this fix right now. But I’ll make a few predictions based on my experience working at a big government contractor:
The software was probably never designed to change the background color, and so it’ll be a much more difficult change than any rational person would expect.
Because of all the procedural red tape, required updates to documentation, etc, etc, etc it will take many months and cost hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of dollars; and
The AFGE, representing TSA employees, will throw up roadblocks because the addition of a green background means re-training the machine operators.
