On Spain [Politics]

I try to restrict my political commentary to a meta-level on this journal, but I’m going to lift that restriction just long enough to say:

Shame on you, Spain

Electing a Socialist government is stupid enough, but it’s understandable since it’s what all the cool kids do in Europe. But this craven act of appeasement makes every country on earth less safe. Shame on the old government for exploiting a national tragedy for political gain; and shame on the people of Spain for surrendering to fear and choosing short-term local security over global security. Regardless of why individual Spaniards voted for the socialists, the message to international terrorists is clear: terrorism works.

Perhaps Spain should not have been involved in international adventures in the first place. But once they were involved they had an obligation to stay the course, because when one nation backs down in the face of a threat it puts every one of their allies in greater danger. Thank you, citizens of Spain for making my family, my country, and the world less safe.

UPDATE: On the other hand, maybe it’s not as bad as it sounds.

  1. Understandable

The link does put things in a more hopeful construction, but my immediate reaction was much the same as yours. Whether that’s the way the jihadi now see it is another matter …

    1. Re: Understandable

I have to keep reminding myself that I know jack-squat about politics in Spain. On the other hand, neither do most terrorists, and that’s not going to stop them from coming to the single obvious conclusion.
