- Gave up on DSL; buckled and ordered a cable modem. Comcast was prompt, and their installer did a bang-up job. Unlike the DISH network guys, who ran the cable inside by opening the basement window a crack (!!!) and draping the wire across the basement, the cable guy actually drilled a hole in the wall and stapled the wire to the molding. Very nice. I felt rotten for having been cranky on the phone with him about not having a Windows machine for him to install the service on.
- On the other hand, they managed to sell Stacey on a year of digital cable TV along with the internet service for the same price as the internet alone. Curses! Foiled again.
- Did I mention my new job gave me a brand-new MacBook pro? Now, I didn’t exactly need “conversion”; I’ve been planning on getting a Mac for years now, and have only lacked the money to do so. However, I must say my expectations have been exceeded; in a myriad ways, it is easily the finest piece of computing hardware I have ever worked with. With Parallels and Fink installed, I can run Mac, Windows, and UNIX software side-by-side, seamlessly, with no noticeable loss of performance. It’s pretty much computing nirvana. And the physical design is superb. The way it adjusts both screen brightness AND keyboard backlighting to suit ambient lighting is just one example.
- Bought my first album on iTunes last night. Supernature by Goldfrapp. With a Mac and a cable modem it was way, way too easy. I am currently held back from abject bankruptcy only by the fact that I refuse to buy DRMed music, so I am limited to the EMI artists on iTunes Plus.

Mac OS is pretty sweet. Though I’ve find myself with a fair list of things I miss from Windows. Just some simple things that save boatloads of time; like re-sizing windows from any side.
